OCS Power Rankings Week 6: Duke, Kansas on the rise

That wasn't exactly the headline on Sunday morning.

After a prolonged mundane period, college basketball revealed its crazy side once again.

Kentucky and Syracuse both were tested by conference rivals, but ended up passing those exams with flying colors — a phrase I’m pretty sure has never been used to describe a UConn men’s basketball player. For the fourth consecutive week, the Wildcats and the Orange were unanimously voted first and second, respectively, by the voters.

That’s when things get interesting. Ohio State saw its 39-game home winning streak come to an end with a loss to now-No.8 Michigan State, as the Buckeyes and persistent whiner Jared Sullinger fell to No.5 in the rankings.

In their place at No.3 are the Missouri Tigers, who looked every bit deserving after thrashing Baylor over the weekend. Austin Rivers helps the Duke Blue Devils move up to the fourth spot. He will forever live in infamy in Chapel Hill, writing his own chapter in the historic rivalry with the No. 7 North Carolina Tar Heels.

The No. 6 Kansas Jayhawks continue to strive for a number one seed in the NCAA tournament, easily disposing of Baylor and Oklahoma State over the week. A struggling No.9 Baylor squad and No.10 UNLV conclude the top ten.

Well that’s peculiar … :

Gonzaga delivers St. Mary’s its first loss in WCC play, only its third loss overall, and stays put at number 24? But Notre Dame solely beats perennial title contender DePaul and not only enters the rankings, but jumps over the Bulldogs? Huh.

Do not fret, ladies and gents. Michigan is back. After defeating the Nebraska Cornhuskers and everybody’s favorite bubble team, Illinois, Michigan overcame all obstacles and made it back into the rankings. You have to give the Wolverines credit; they obviously never quit. Here’s to your exit after losing to Ohio State this weekend, boys. We’ll probably see you the week after that, though.

Finally, how does UNLV elevate seven spots into the top-ten after one two-point victory? Yet, Michigan State has the best victory of anyone this week and moves up only two places.

Leader of the pack:

Thanks to Notre Dame’s entrance, the Big East ties the Big Ten with five teams in the rankings. The ACC follows with four schools, while the top-heavy Big 12 has three. The suddenly-woeful SEC has only two teams on the list for a second-consecutive week, tying the conference with the WCC and the Mountain West.

Welcome to the party:

Everybody welcome the aforementioned Michigan Wolverines and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who enter the rankings at No.22 and No.23, respectively.

Also say “hello” to the best mid-major team you didn’t even know was good, Wichita State. The Shockers are absolutely crushing fools, including a blowout victory in Omaha over Creighton, which knocked the Jays out of the rankings. It’s great to see them finally getting some love here at OCS.

“Having beaten Baylor twice now, Kansas has proved they can play with quality teams despite their lack of depth. Thomas Robinson is currently just edging out Kentucky’s Davis for Play of the Year honors, and the recent play of Jeff Withey makes Kansas very dangerous.” – Greg Mendell, Miami (FL) ’13

Last week: L at Kentucky 78-58, L vs. Tennessee 75-70

This week: 2/14 at Alabama, 2/18 at Arkansas

“Losing to Kentucky is okay; most people do that. Losing to Tennessee at home, however, is a cause for concern. Florida needs more consistent play out of Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker to get back on track ” – Trevor Hass, Syracuse ’15

13. Georgetown 19-5 (Previous week: 12)

Last week: L at Syracuse 64-61 OT, W vs. St. John’s 71-61

Last week: W at DePaul 89-76, W vs. Cincinnati 95-78

It is half time of the Louisville-Syracuse game and Trevor may want to rethink that comment he made about Syracuse not losing again. Ricky and his white suit may find a way to win this one!

About the Author

Originally from Rapid City, South Dakota, Mychal Anderson graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2011 with a double major in history and political science. The inordinate amount of scholarly essays and research that became necessary to complete such a degree sparked a natural editorial instinct and a passion for the written word. This fixation, combined with extensive knowledge and adoration of collegiate athletics, formed his desired career path as a sports writer/editor. He is an opinionated individual that is not afraid to engage in friendly banter, but who would ultimately proclaim his greatest writing strength to be in research-based articles rather than reflective columns. Alongside his position at On Campus Sports, Mychal currently works in academic advising at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Due to the fact that he does not get to watch his beloved Gophers and the Big Ten as much as he used to, he (secretly) has become an increasingly attentive follower of the Mizzou Tigers and their Big XII foes. He perhaps even wears black and gold on casual Fridays, but, seriously, don’t tell any of his buddies back in Dinkytown. As far as future plans, Mychal will hopefully (fingers crossed) be attending Missouri's School of Journalism in pursuit of a master’s degree, and he fully expects to continue to blossom as a writer/editor. He is excited about this opportunity with On Campus Sports and is looking forward to growing with the company. Twitter: @MychalAnderson
