Ask any Big East coach about away games and you’ll get a carbon copy of what head coach John Thompson III said leading up to the Hoyas’ trip to Chicago: “Every game in this league is big.”

While that may be the party line, the reality is there is a clear division between the haves and the have nots in the Big East. For the top tier teams of the conference, road games against DePaul and USF are, at worst, televised scrimmages.

Such was the case in Chicago on Tuesday night, where the Hoyas cruised to an 83-75 win over the Blue Demons. Despite keeping the game close up through the opening minutes of the second half, DePaul ultimately could not keep up with the firepower of Georgetown’s offense.

Youth has been the story of the Hoyas’ success this season, but Tuesday night belonged to the upperclassmen. With the absence of starting point guard Markel Starks, and freshman phenom Otto Porter struggling to find points in the paint, the veterans were more than willing to take control. Senior guard Jason Clark put on a shooting clinic, going 11-14 from the field and 5-7 from beyond the arc; he went on to finish the game with a season-high 31 points. Senior center Henry Sims also got in on the action, exploiting DePaul’s lackluster presence in the paint to come away with 16 points on the night before fouling out.

Despite a miserable shooting night from the line for the Hoyas, the inside presence of Henry Sims and the lights out shooting of Jason Clark and junior Hollis Thompson proved to be too much for the inexperienced Blue Demons. DePaul now drops to 1-5 in the Big East, extending its losing streak to four games, and moving yet another step closer to realizing that maybe the MAC was the conference to go with all along.
