The best strategy this past weekend for the top teams: take the day off.
#1 LSU and #2 Alabama had byes … as well as another team who had a great weekend without having to do a thing.
A couple teams wished they had a similar schedule as the Tigers and Crimson Tide. Kansas State and Clemson both lost, which knocked them out of possibly getting a national championship birth, and perhaps even a BCS bowl bid.
Stanford lucked out in coming from behind to win in triple overtime at USC. The Trojans exposed Stanford for who they really are: a good team, but not a great team. Neither team seemed to have a capable defense, and Stanford’s offense sputtered at times. With Oregon, Notre Dame, and the Pac-12 Championship Game left, Stanford may stumble at some point.
Oklahoma State may have fared the best this past week, as they easily handled an overhyped Baylor team, 59-24. The Cowboys could possibly get tested from Iowa State, Kansas State, or Texas Tech. However, Oklahoma will probably be the only real competition for the Cowboys, as the Sooners bounced back this week against K-State.
Of all the teams in the national title picture, the one who gained the most from Week 9 was Boise State, and they didn’t even play. Even with dropping one place in the BCS standings, Boise’s computer numbers are much better than Stanford’s. With Stanford looking beatable, Oklahoma State still having to play Oklahoma, and losses from Clemson and Kansas State, Boise State has a chance of finally making it to the national championship game.
If the Broncos can get the Stanford and Oklahoma State dominoes to fall, Boise State will probably be playing the winner of the SEC January 9th in New Orleans for the crystal football.
Meanwhile, in just a few days comes perhaps the true national championship, as #1 LSU and #2 Alabama will face off in Tuscaloosa.
