The best helmets – or worst, depending

Out of all of the pieces that make up a football uniform, the helmet is the most important ingredient. There is nothing more iconic than the helmet.
Helmets have come a long way in college football since the game was first being played. More bold designs and colors hit the NFL first, and it did not take long for college teams to catch on. Ever since then, helmets in college have never been the same.
With this said, let’s take a look at the top ten college football helmet designs of all-time.
10. At No. 10, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have one of the best-looking football helmets in the game. Notre Dame’s helmets are one of the most traditional helmets in any sport. Since they first came out, they have always been that beautiful gold color. There have been some design changes here and there, but for the most part they have always been gold. The Fighting Irish have tried to spice up there helmets in the past. In the late 1950′s they added a green clover to the sides of the helmets and in 1963, they replaced that with white numbers. However, nothing has looked better than the all gold helmets.
9. No matter what helmet the Oregon Ducks are rocking, they look good. Their green helmet with the yellow “O” is a classic. However, their “carbon-dipped” helmet is one of the best looking helmets in the game. The Ducks may change their helmets and uniforms more than any team in the world, but they look darn good doing it.
8. Hawaii has by far the best green helmet in all of college football. The “H” on both sides of their helmets have been a great fit since 2000. When you look at these helmets, you can’t help but think of Hawaii.
7. The Florida Gators’ orange helmet is one of the most vibrant in all of college football. Add “Gators” to both sides of the helmet and you have one of the best looking helmets in all of college football. These beautiful helmets have been in use since 1979. They previously had the letters “UF” on both sides of the helmet and at one time they just had the letter “F.”
6. Alabama Crimson Tide have had the same football helmet since the beginning of time. Not really, but they have definitely had the same helmet for a very long time. 1960 to be exact. Their helmet is very basic, but basic works for them. The player numbers on both sides of the helmet is a classic. There have been many teams in the past that have used the player numbers on the sides, but Alabama is the only team that can truly rock the numbers.
5. The Miami Hurricanes are most famously known as “The U.” There are hundreds of universities and the Hurricanes are the one team who get to be THE university. This tradition started in 1973, when Miami’s Athletic Federation was trying to come up with new helmet ideas. They thought about putting the letters “UM” on their helmets, but there were too many schools with those initials. Then they decided to just use the letter “U” and it stuck. Their white helmet with the green and orange “U” is one of the most attractive helmets in all of college football.
4. The USC Trojans have seen better days, but one thing no one can take away from them is good looking helmets. When you think of a true Trojan warrior the colors of USC comes to mind. The Trojans did a great job incorporating these colors into their helmets. The Trojan on the sides of their helmets is legendary and has been used since 1972. USC tried a different Trojan logo out in 1992, but they changed it back the following season.
3. Florida State has experimented with all kinds of helmets in their history, including gold, yellow and red. However, their best looking helmet is definitely their gold one, which includes the Seminole spear on both sides and the tomahawks (stickers are given out for good performances and academics) all over it. This first gold helmet with the Seminole spears came out in 1976 and ever since then, the Seminoles have had one of the best helmets in all of college football.
2. These next two team helmets are a toss up between first and second place. It really just depends where you come from and who you think is better in this heated rivalry. Ask any Michigan fan on who has the best helmet design and they will always answer with the Michigan Wolverines. Since 1969, the Wolverines have stuck with the same helmet. The mixture of blue and maize is one of a kind.
1. The Ohio State Buckeyes have the best helmet design of all-time. Of course this list is opionionated in every way, but the Buckeyes’ helmet design should be in everyones top five. Ohio State has rocked the famous grey helmets with scarlet, black and white stripes in it since 1968. However, the Buckeyes’ helmets would not be complete without their Buckeye leaf stickers. This is pure genius. These stickers represent good plays that the players make, so the more good plays, the more stickers.

If you are going old school here wouldn’t it make sense to put Penn State in here. Rich tradition with great football and class. Understand it is just a helmet, but ND making top ten? I might be from Boise, But the white helmets that Nike busted out for the Broncos were pretty sexy!

Thanks for the read. To be honest, I am surprised you didn’t say anything about me leaving out Texas. A lot of people claim that Texas has one of the best helmet designs in the game. However, I am not a big fan of their helmet or Penn State’s either.
ND’s helmet is plain, but I think it looks great. They just came out with a new helmet, but it is a new shade of gold. Not a huge change, but enough to make a difference I suppose.
Boise State’s new white helmet does look good. I actually like their new blue one better. It is pretty much the same one as the white one, but blue. Colorado State Rams also have a similar white helmet to Boise’s.
